reading an epitaph scene in Act 5, Scene 3 of Much Ado About Nothing

This intriguing engraving, designed by Hubert Gravelot, depicts the epitaph scene in Act 5, Scene 3 of Much Ado About Nothing, when Claudio reads a poem affixed to Hero’s tomb. It is the only image used to illustrate that play in Lewis Theobald’s eight-volume Works of Shakespeare (1740). http://ow.ly/fNNs50nuGYV #ShakespeareWeek

CLAUDIO
Is this the monument of Leonato?
CLAUDIO
Is this the family tomb of Leonato?
FIRST LORD
It is, my lord.
FIRST LORD
It is, my lord.
CLAUDIO
(reading an epitaph)
Done to death by slanderous tongues
5Was the Hero that here lies.
Death, in guerdon of her wrongs,
Gives her fame which never dies.
So the life that died with shame
Lives in death with glorious fame.
CLAUDIO
(reading an epitaph)
Here lies Hero,
The heroic maiden killed by slanderous words.
To repay her for her troubles, Death
Gives her undying fame.
So the life that died with shame
Lives on with fame.
