‘How do I love thee? Let me count the ways
I love thee to the depth & breadth & height’
I love thee to the depth & breadth & height’
Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote this famous sonnet during her courtship with the poet Robert Browning.
The couple met in May 1845 and while his attraction to her was almost instantaneous, Elizabeth’s feelings took longer to develop. Eventually, Elizabeth and Robert remained happily married for 15 years until 29 June 1861 when Elizabeth died in Robert’s arms after a long illness.
